Cele două gemene şi-au petrecut aproape întreaga viaţă în orfelinat, la Păclişa, în condiţii extrem de dificile. Ele au fost abandonate de părinţi la naştere, iar regretul lor este că au trecut aproape 50 de ani şi nu au reuşit să-şi cunoască părinţii. De când au fost integrate la Casa “Betania” din Haţeg, cele două surori au învăţat un lucru elementar… să-şi scrie numele! Perioada petrecută de Irina şi Ana la orfelinatul din localitatea Păclişa şi-a lăsat amprenta asupra vieţii lor. Ele s-au născut cu un handicap şi au locuit împreună cu alţi 200 de copii, cu probleme similare de sănătate. Educatorii lor s-au comportat extrem de dur cu ei. Regimul de la Păclişa includea pedepse aspre şi deseori bătaie. Irina ne-a mărturisit că a fost pedepsită inclusiv pentru faptul că a avut curajul să meargă la biserică: “Acolo ne-au bătut foarte mult când am fost mici. După ce am crescut, ne făceau injecţii ca să dormim. Şi după ce m-am sculat eram ameţită. Nu aveam cu cine să vorbim sau să spunem ce ni se întâmplă”. În cei 41 de ani, Irina şi Ana nu au fost învăţate să scrie sau să facă unele calcule matematice simple. Angajaţii de la Casa “Betania” din Haţeg au făcut demersurile necesare pentru ca ele să poată primi pensia pentru persoane cu handicap. “Ca să ridic pensia trebuia să iscălesc. Aici m-au învăţat să semnez”, spune Irina. Tot ea este cea care administrează banii şi face cumpărăturile. Îi place foarte mult să cumpere diverse electrocasnice sau aparate electrice. Deseori, Irina simte nevoia să-şi protejeze sora şi încearcă să o alinte, pregătindu-i mâncarea sau hainele. Ana a fost plecată pentru o perioadă la o familie dintr-o localitate aflată în vecinătatea Haţegului ca să ajute la treburile gospodăreşti. La rândul ei şi Irina este foarte activă, mai ales când vine vorba de activitatea din cadrul Casei “Betania”. Ea ajută de fiecare dată bucătăreasa să strângă masa şi să spele vasele sau sprijină celelate fete din casă. “Mie îmi place să fac curăţenie şi să spăl vase. Mă plictisesc să stau toată ziua fără să fac nimic. Altă dată merg să ajut la seră sau în grădiniţa cu flori. După ce termin treaba am timp şi să mă plimb în oraş. Nici eu, nici sora mea nu vrem să mai plecăm de aici. Vreau să rămân aici până mor”.
The two twins had spent most of their lives in an orphanage, in Paclisa, under very difficult conditions. They were abandoned by their parents at birth and their greatest regret is that almost fifty years have passed and they haven’t had the chance to meet them. Since they were integrated into “Bethany Home,” in Hateg, they have learned one elementary thing: to write their name!
The time spent in the orphanage at Paclisa has weighed heavily on the two girls. They were born with a handicap and lived there with two hundred other children who suffered from various disabilities, as well. The educators gave them a really harsh treatment. It was not at all unusual for children there to be severely punished and even beaten. Irina confessed that she was once beaten for having gone to church: “They used to beat us a lot there, ever since we were little children. When we were older, they used to give us shots that would put us to sleep. When I woke up, I always felt dizzy. There wasn’t anybody we could talk to and let them know what was going on.”
For forty-one years, they had never been taught how to read, write or how to do basic Mathematical operations. The social workers at “Bethany Home” made the necessary arrangements for them to receive the state pension they were entitled to due to their disability. “In order to be able to pick up my pension, I have to sign. Here I was taught how to write my own signature,” says Irina. She is also the one handling the money and doing the shopping. What she loves most is buying electric and electronic devices. She often feels the need to protect her sister and goes out of her way to spoil her, by preparing the food or the clothes for her.
Ana lived for a while with a family from a neighbouring village, where she helped with various tasks around the house.
Irina is also very active, especially when it comes to doing things at “Bethany Home.” She is always there to help the cook, clear the table and to wash the dishes. “I like to clean up and to help with the dishes. It would be boring to sit around doing nothing all day. Sometimes I help in the greenhouse or in the flower garden. After I am done with the work, I still have time to walk around the town. Neither me, nor my sister ever want to leave this place. I want to live here until the day I die.”
